Georgia redshirt freshman quarterback Aaron Murray and junior center Ben Jones have been named the Southeastern Conference player of the week at their respective positions, according to a league announcement on Monday.
Murray has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week for the second straight week while Jones has been tabbed the SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week for the first time since 2008.
Murray, a 6-1 native of Tampa, Florida, led the Dawgs to their second straight conference win as Georgia routed Vanderbilt 43-0. He posted a career-high 287 yards (15-of-24) and two touchdowns with no interceptions. The Dawgs tallied a season-high 547 yards of total offense as Murray’s passing efficiency soared to a season-high mark of 190.4 (he is now the nation’s top freshman in the category and No. 18 in the country with a season mark of 157.2).
Murray, who added 36 rushing yards against the Commodores, is now No. 3 in the SEC in passing yards per game (236.1). He enabled Georgia to score on seven of its first nine possessions as the Bulldogs scored 40+ points on an SEC opponent for the second game in a row.
Jones, a 6-3 native of Centreville, Ala., anchored an offense that accumulated 547 total yards during the Dawgs’ 43-0 shutout. Georgia has now piled up more than 400 yards and more than 40 points in each of its last two games. Jones graded out at 83 percent overall, including 100 percent on pass plays, and finished with a team-best 20 knockdown blocks and two pins.
Combining with his teammate to give up no sacks to Murray, Jones helped the Dawgs control the ball for 37:15 of 60 minutes as Georgia had both a 100-yard receiver and a 100-yard rusher during the same game for only the second time in 2010.
This is Murray’s second consecutive SEC weekly honor after also earning the award following his performance against Tennessee. Jones was last named the Offensive Lineman of the Week during the 2008 season.
