Lady Dawgs Roll Past Belmont

BASKETBALL

Jasmine Hassell put up season-high numbers of 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead No. 10 Georgia to victory over Belmont, 70-38, on Sunday afternoon at Stegeman Coliseum.

“We had our season-high assists and our season-low turnovers today, so the kids really did a good job with the basketball with passing and catching and getting it to the right people at the right time," said coach Andy Landers. "I was encouraged not just by how they got it inside to our post players, but what happened once they got it in there. Hassell went to work and Kaelyn Causwell really did a nice job inside.”

Hassell's performance marked Georgia's (4-0) first double-double of the season. It was a night of highs for Georgia as Jasmine James tied her season high with 10 points, Erika Ford posted a season-high eight rebounds and Marjorie Butler recorded season- and career-highs of seven points and five steals.

After Belmont (1-3) scored the first points of the game with a jumper by Jordan Coleman less than two minutes into the contest, Georgia cruised to a double-digit lead with a 19-0 run that lasted nine minutes.

The Bruins sank their second basket of the game with 9:05 on the clock, before Hassell sparked a 12-0 run for the Lady Dawgs, which brought the score to 31-4.

The final six minutes of the period saw Georgia narrowly outscore Belmont 9-8 and end the half with a 40-12 lead.

In the first half, Georgia shot 37.5 percent from the field and held Belmont to a 20 percent showing. Hassell played a large roll in the Lady Dawgs' productive first half, accounting for 11 points, six rebounds and two steals.

Belmont entered the second period strong, sinking two treys in the first minute of play, but it was too little too late, as Georgia maintained a lead of at least 24 points throughout the remainder of the game.

The Bruins experienced a surge midway through the second half, with a quick 6-0 run that lasted just two minutes. The Lady Dawgs refused to let Belmont gain control and executed an 8-2 run of their own that culminated in a score of 63-31.

In the final seven minutes of the game, neither team allowed more than three unanswered points.

The Lady Dawgs will play the fifth and final game in a span of 10 days on Tuesday, when they host Savannah State at 7 p.m. With a win, Landers will become the eighth basketball coach - men's or women's - to record 800 wins at a single NCAA Division I school. The other coaches who have done so are: Geno Auriemma, Jim Boehim, Pat Summitt, Mike Krzyzewski, Jim Phelan, Adolph Rupp and Dean Smith.

Coach Andy Landers

On only giving up four offensive rebounds to Belmont…

“They had one at the half, so I thought that was just unbelievable. We’re going at it with a different feel and a different enthusiasm. I think for a long time they were going to the offensive boards because we were telling them to go, but for some reason right now I’m getting the impression that they’re going because they want the basketball.”

On the play of Shacobia Barbee…

“She guards you well, she rebounds well, and today on two occasions you could see her calculating and setting a play up and then executing it beautifully. One was in transition when she veered a little to the left and pulled Hassell’s man and then flipped it back to Hassell. She has a nice sense for the game and how to manipulate people that she’s playing with and against.”

Belmont Head Coach Brittney Ezell

On todays game:

“I think that Georgia’s a very good basketball team. I think that they’re able to beat you from all five positions and they’re very impressive. I like the fight of our team in the second half. We came out a little bit shell shocked, some shots didn’t fall early and getting behind on a team like Georgia is not something you can overcome very easily. Georgia played a great game.”

On the second half:

“What we tell them when we start talking about our game plan is that it’s not who you play but how you play. The way that we played in the first half isn’t indicative of the type of team we have or the type of program we have. So we told them to worry about us more so than Georgia. Georgia’s going to do what they do and we have to do what we do well and prepare for our next game. We’ve got to worry about winning our conference.”
