FOOTBALL

On Marcus Lattimore…

“We have to get to him before he can make a move and get downfield. We’re going to have to create some pressure in the backfield and block the holes that he likes to find.”

On Geathers and Jenkins…

“I think they are going to play a big role in this game. I think we are going to need them to establish the middle for us so we can come off and corral Marcus Lattimore.”

On focusing on this week…

“Even though we lost last week, the whole team came together and realized that we didn’t work the entire offseason for just one game. We have more goals that we are trying to get to. South Carolina is the first game that we need to win to achieve some of the goals that we set for ourselves.”

On playing at home…

“Everyone is really excited to come out and play in front of the home crowd. It’s the home opener and the SEC opener, which I think will add to the atmosphere. It’s going to be a great game.”

On the defense…

“The guys on defense know that the offense isn’t going to score on every drive. We know it’s a part of football. When circumstances like that happen, we know that we have to step up and show how great of a defense we are.”

On going up against Alshon Jeffrey…

“I’d love the challenge to go up against Alshon Jeffrey. He’s a good player with great ball skills, can run well and is a polished receiver that can do just about anything.”

On Marcus Lattimore…

“It will definitely be a challenge to get him to the ground. We have everyone back from last year and we think can get the job done.”

On playing at home…

“We haven’t played in Sanford Stadium since the Georgia Tech game last year, so we’re all excited. We’re ready to get back between the hedges.”

On getting past last week to focus on South Carolina…

“We still have a long season ahead of us. Last week doesn’t mean anything right now. This week is when it counts, against an SEC team. The whole bus ride home we talked about South Carolina and how we can stop them. That loss is behind us, but I think it brought this team closer together.”

On opening the season with a loss…

“I think if we’d have had a better season last year and then opened this season with a loss, I think things would be a little different. I don’t think as many people would have jumped to criticize, but I think that coming off the first losing season in like 14 years and then opening with a loss, that’s never good, I think people have something to say about it. It’s tough to swallow when you care a lot about the team and your teammates and you’re here living it everyday and seeing everything we’re putting into it, to see people tear it down in a day because we had an off game and we lost to a good team, it hurts and it’s obviously going to stir up some emotion. But it’s to be expected because the fans care about the team just like we do.”

On the importance of the South Carolina game…

“I think it’s as pivotal game as we can have because it’s the first game of SEC play and we want to control our destiny. All of our goals are still in our grasp because we are 0-0 in SEC play, just like everyone else. If we win, we’ll be 1-0 and have a 1-up on South Carolina. That’s all we’re really worried about right now. If we start worrying about everything else, like if this loss is going to start a slide like it did last season, we lose focus. And we need to be completely focused because we have a great team coming in to play us. And a great quarterback, obviously Stephen Garcia got in the game and did some amazing things last week, come from behind victory and everything. We definitely have our work cut out for us, but I think it’s definitely something we can handle and something that we’re planning on going out and achieving.”

On being the underdog this week…

“I guess you could say that’s its different. We don’t go into the South Carolina game thinking we’re going to lose; we don’t go into any game thinking we’re going to lose. Historically, Georgia has dominated this series, when you look at it, it’s very lopsided as far as the history of all the years we’ve every played them. Since I’ve been here, we’ve lost to them twice, my freshman year and last year, and it’s not something I want to do again. I want to go out on top. I’ve said it before, we have a strong dislike for a lot of teams and there’s a lot of rivalry games and South Carolina’s definitely one of them. In the series, historically, we’ve been playing as big brother and the tables are turned this year and that’s fine with use; we’ve gone into games underdogs before and come out on top and that’s what we plan on doing this week.”

On the lack of blocking against Boise State…

“I think they brought a little more than what we expected and what they showed on film. I guess they thought in order to beat us they had to pressure Aaron (Murray) and show a lot of blitz, which they did and their outcome was very successful. That’s one of the things we’re going to work on now, picking up the blitz, and if we have any corrections that we need to make, we need to do it right now.”

On the importance of the South Carolina game…

“It’s very important for us because we definitely want to win the SEC East. We took note that we lost to Boise State and we don’t want to have that feeling again. In order to fulfill our dreams and do everything that we came here to do, we have to beat South Carolina.”

On the no-huddle offense…

“I think in order to have a successful drive, you have to get first downs and complete passes. If you don’t do that, you aren’t going to be successful. We started out shaky at first and then we started establishing what we can do and catching them off-guard but we never really got a rhythm and that hurt us.”
