Athletics Board Convenes for Fall Meeting

The University of Georgia Athletic Association Board of Directors held its Fall meeting Friday on the UGA campus to discuss both financial and athletic matters.
In a wide-ranging Athletic Director's report, J. Reid Parker Director of Athletics Greg McGarity first reflected on the newfound enthusiasm within the overall athletics program. The success of Dawg teams in 2018 — leading to an 8th-place finish in the Learfield Director’s Cup — has helped to make UGA the preferred destination for more and more prospective student-athletes. Along with Georgia’s popularity will come UGA’s continued responsibility to educate and train these young student-athletes, McGarity said.
McGarity also touched on the following additional topics in his report:
> Reflections on the West End Zone dedication that took place Friday. Completion of the $63 million project was the culmination of a joint venture that involved many and varied entities. Most prominent among those mentioned included head coach Kirby Smart and the football staff; the UGA Office of University Architects for Facilities Planning; Deputy Athletic Director Josh Brooks and his Operations staff; and the contractors that contributed work to the project.
> Acknowledgement of the many facility enhancements that have touched nearly every athletic program at UGA in the past decade. Over $167 million in improvements to UGA’s athletic facilities have taken place during this time period, funded by a combination of donations and UGA reserves.
> Recognition of UGAAA’s nutrition program, its growth since the addition of a single staffer in 2011, and the total investment (over $3.6 million annually) in the food and nutritional supplying of Georgia’s student-athletes.
> The improvements in UGA’s fundraising and donor relations, resulting in a record-setting fiscal year 2018, in which over $80 million was raised. McGarity also announced the promotion of Matt Borman, who has directed UGA’s athletic fundraising since December of 2016, to Deputy Director of Athletics.
McGarity then requested approval to allocate $3.1 million of operating reserves to begin construction on a new Equestrian Clubhouse at the team’s complex in Bishop, Georgia, 10 miles south of Athens. The 7,000-square foot facility will provide fully equipped locker room and dressing facilities, a 70-seat team meeting room, sports medicine space, uniform storage and laundry facilities as well as coaches’ space, including an office suite and locker room.
The Equestrian Clubhouse must clear authorization from the USG Board of Regents at its October 2018 meeting – after first serving as an informational item in its September meeting – before construction can begin in December. The projected date of completion for this project is January of 2020.
McGarity also reported that an architect has been chosen to begin designs on another facility project: renovation of the grandstand at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Other highlights of the meeting included:
> Faculty Athletics Representative David Shipley gave a glowing academic report. The most prominent information he shared was the 3.1 overall grade point recorded by all UGA student-athletes in the 2017-18 academic year. That figure matches the all-time highest GPA for a single year, equaling the 3.1 mark of the 2016-17 year.
> Executive Associate Athletic Director for Compliance Will Lawler conducted an educational session for board members approximately 20 minutes in length. Among the topics Lawler covered was the NCAA’s expectations for institutional control.
> Reports from all three student representatives on the Board: Roya Naghepour, a senior from Roswell, Ga.; Kayla Smith, a junior pole vaulter from Indianapolis, Ind.; and Connor O’Neill, a senior men’s basketball player, also from Roswell.

Georgia Track & Field Women Capture First NCAA Team Title In History

The Georgia women’s track and field team earned UGA its first team national championship at the NCAA Indoor Championships in College Station, Texas, on Saturday.
Powered by two national individual champions and nine scorers, the Lady Dawgs tallied a program record 61 points to finish in front of Arkansas (49), Kentucky (34) and Florida (32) in the team standings. This marks Georgia’s fifth straight top-three finish at the NCAA indoor meet, including the team’s runner-up finish in 2017.
This is the 43rd overall team titles for the University of Georgia Athletic Association, including the 30th by one of the Georgia women’s teams and the first for any team since women’s swimming and diving title in 2016.
The Georgia men completed the meet with their second-best point total in history (32, trailing their 35.5 from 2017) to take third. Florida (40) and USC (37) were the top two finishers.
Becoming just the second competitor in history to win three NCAA indoor women’s triple jump titles, senior Keturah Orji highlighted the day by traveling the eighth-longest distance in collegiate history of 46 feet, 10 inches to give Georgia its second NCAA individual title of the meet.
The Dawgs had 13 more scorers on Saturday:
- Junior Denzel Comenentia scored in his second event of the weekend, taking sixth in the weight throw.
- Freshman Johannes Erm and senior Karl Saluri combined to score seven points in the heptathlon.
- Senior Cejhae Greene and junior Kendal Williams sped to top-seven finishes in the 60m.
- Another Dawg pair, junior Keenon Laine and sophomore Darius Carbin, were back-to-back finishers in the high jump to finish in the top eight.
- Junior Kate Hall scored in her second event after flying across the line in the women’s 60m.
- Junior Michael Nicholls passed the competition by to score in the 60m hurdles.
- Freshman Tara Davis distinguished herself as a double scorer after scoring in the 60m hurdles in the meet’s second day.
- Freshman Lynna Irby clocked the second-best time of her career to add points in the 400m.
- Orji now owns all of the top eight marks on the collegiate all-time list with her win in the triple jump.
- Irby set up in the sixth lane of the 200m final and gave the Lady Dawgs’ extra cushion with a top-three finish in her second final.
Hall was the first Georgia team member to win a 2018 NCAA individual title after leading the charge on a historic 1-2-3 finish in the women’s long jump. In addition, Orji and Davis (long jump), Comenentia (shot put), sophomore Louisa Grauvogel (pentathlon) and sophomore Jessica Drop (5000m) all finished in one of the top eight scoring spots to score on Friday.
There were also a number of school records that fell. Irby topped her own school record in the 200m during the final, trimming .11 off her top time in Georgia’s last event of the meet. During Friday’s action, Hall set a school record in the long jump and 60m, Davis topped her own UGA record in the 60m hurdles and Irby matched her previous Lady Dawg all-time No. 1 time in the 200m. Also of note, Hall’s 7.98 in the 60m hurdle semifinalist topped the World Junior record.

Thirty-three UGA Student-Athletes to Graduate Friday

Thirty-three University of Georgia student-athletes will receive their undergraduate or graduate degrees Friday, December 15 at the annual fall commencement exercises. The undergraduate ceremonies will begin at 9:30 a.m. in Stegeman Coliseum followed by graduate ceremonies at 2:30pm.
Among the 33 UGA student-athlete graduates are one baseball player, three members of the equestrian team, 12 current and former members of the football team, two members of the women’s golf team, one member of the gymnastics team, two soccer players, one softball player, three men’s swim and dive athletes, two members of the women’s tennis team, two men’s track and field athletes, and four women’s track and field athletes.

Four Dawgs Chosen For Georgia Sports Hall Of Fame

Moody Hancock was the first female to
receive a full athletic scholarship to Georgia. A two-time All-American, she
was named 1981 National Golfer of the Year after she captured medalist honors
at the AIAW National Championships that spring -- becoming the first UGA female
student-athlete to claim a national title -- and leading Georgia to a runner-up
finish. She finished her career with four individual titles and 12 team crowns.
Moody Hancock is a member of UGA’s Circle of Honor and Women’s Golf Coaches
Association’s Hall of Fame.
Four athletes and coaches with ties
to the University of Georgia highlight the Class of 2018 for the Georgia Sports
Hall of Fame.
Football standout Champ Bailey,
swimming and track letterman and philanthropist Tom Cousins, current men’s golf
coach Chris Haack, and women’s golf star Terri Moody Hancock were among those
chosen by the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame’s Honors Court.
The additional members of the Class
of 2018 are Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United owner Arthur Blank, Lombardi and
Outland award winner and longtime collegiate coach Tracy Rocker, Olympic gold
medal sprinter Angelo Taylor and basketball standout Kenny “Sky” Walker.
The official induction will take
place Saturday, Feb. 4, 2018, at the Macon City Auditorium. Tickets and

Bailey, one of the most versatile
players in Georgia history, starred for the Dawgs from 1996-98. He was a
consensus All-American in 1998 as he logged snaps at cornerback and receiver
and on returns. Bailey won the Bronko Nagurski Award as the nation’s top
defender in 1998. He also was a member of the track and field team and set a
school indoor long jump record at the 1998 SEC Championship. Bailey continued
his success in the NFL as a 12-time Pro Bowl performer for the Washington
Redskins and the Denver Broncos. He was named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team for
the 2000s.
A Georgia swimming letterman in 1950
and 1951 and a member of the 1950 SEC track and field championship squad,
Cousins is a real estate developer who brought the Hawks (NBA) and the Flames
(NHL) to Atlanta and later spearheaded the revitalization of East Lake Golf
Club, the current home of the PGA Tour Championship. The Cousins Foundation has
been a generous benefactor to UGA and the Athletic Association, including gifts
to endow the head coach positions for baseball and swimming and diving.
Haack is in his 22nd season as the
Dawgs’ head coach for golf. He has guided Georgia to a school-record 60 tournament
titles, including two national and eight SEC championships. Haack is a 2-time
National and a 5-time SEC Coach of the Year. He has produced 60 All-Americans,
many of whom currently are starring on the PGA Tour. Haack previously was
inducted into the Golf Coaches Association of America and the Georgia State
Golf Association halls of fame.

48 UGA Student-Athletes Named to SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll
Forty-eight student-athletes from the University of Georgia have been named to the 2011-2012 Southeastern Conference First-Year Academic Honor Roll, according to an announcement this week by the SEC office.
In order to qualify for the SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll, each student-athlete must: have a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or higher at the nominating institution; be on scholarship or a letter winner; have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial credit at the nominating institution; and have been a member of the varsity team for the sport’s entire NCAA Championship segment.

Krueger Is All-American

Georgia junior Kristie Krueger became just the third cross country All-American in Lady Dawg history at the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Indiana, on Monday.
In what she described as the “windiest day she has ever run a race,” Krueger was the top finisher from the Southeastern Conference after taking 28th with a 6k time of 20:40.6. The Argyle, Texas, native was 164th during her first trip to the national cross country meet as a sophomore in 2009.
Only Natalie Picchetti (27th in 2007) and Keli Butler (11th in 1990) had earned All-America honors for the Georgia women in the program’s history coming into Monday’s race.
“Kristie’s finish is a nice ending to a fantastic season,” said Dawg distance coach Jeff Pigg, who watched as Krueger and the field battled gusts up to 30 miles per hour and unseasonably warm temperatures in the upper 60s. “It’s been fun to see her get better and better. When a runner who is primarily a miler steps up like this in cross country, you know it’s a special person that you are working with. This closes out the cross country season and now we can’t wait to get going with the track season.”
Krueger said she “couldn’t even run in a straight line during warm-ups” because of the wind, but the 2010 indoor All-American in the mile was able to stay with the front pack of 30 from start to finish.
“I didn’t have my best race of the year, but I’m pleased I was able to earn All-America honors,” said Krueger. “I am exhausted from this season and looking forward to a little rest. I wish I would have had a better finish in this meet, but overall I couldn’t have asked for a better season.”
Krueger’s 2010 campaign was a memorable one. She captured Georgia's first NCAA South Regional individual title after winning her 6k race with her first sub-20:00 time of her career in Hoover, Alabama, on November 13th. She was later named the South Region Female Athlete of the Year.
She was also honored as the SEC Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Year after becoming just the second SEC cross country champion in school history on November 1st in Columbia, South Carolina.
In Krueger's five meets this season coming into the NCAA Championships, she finished in the top 10 in all of them and won three. After opening up the year with a victory at the Georgia Cross Country Invitational at her team's home course in Bishop, Krueger took ninth at the NCAA Pre-Nationals, which was run on the NCAA Championships course.
“We put a high priority on the SEC Championships from the team standpoint and she knew the pressure was on her for both that meet and the Regionals,” Pigg said. “It’s tough to hold that intensity for so long, it kind of zaps you. But she came (to Terre Haute) without her teammates and answered a very tall order. No matter what happens during a season, you are kind of left with the feeling that you had in your final meet and I would say this is a great way to conclude the year.”
Villanova junior Sheila Reid (20:06.9) won the individual competition to lead her team to its second straight NCAA title. In the men’s 10k, Liberty senior Samuel Chelanga clocked a 29:22.2 as Oklahoma State blistered Florida State 73-193 to claim the team crown.
