Gilliard And Walsh Honored

FOOTBALL

Georgia junior inside linebacker Mike Gilliard and senior place-kicker Blair Walsh have been awarded weekly honors following their performances during the 20-12 victory at Tennessee.

Gilliard was named the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week as well as the College Football Performance Awards National Linebacker of the Week for the first time in his career. Walsh was awarded the SEC Special Teams Player of the Week following his performance versus the Volunteers.

Gilliard, a 6-2, 220-pound native of Valdosta finished with a game-high and career-high 12 tackles, including a sack for -14 yards and 2.5 tackles for loss of 20 yards, a forced fumble, two quarterback hurries and a pass breakup during the Dawgs’ win. This marked the fourth straight game that Gilliard has led Georgia in tackles as he tops the team with 40 stops.

Thanks in part to Gilliard’s contributions in the middle, the Dawg defense held Tennessee to -20 yards rushing, which is the lowest output for a Dawg opponent since 1999. Georgia has allowed just two touchdowns in the past four games and is now third in the SEC in total defense, rushing defense and pass defense.

DSC_0191Walsh, a 5-10, 192-pound native of Boca Raton, Florida, was 2-for-2 in field goals and hit a pair of PATs to pace the Dawgs during their 20-12 win. He drilled a 35 yarder to put Georgia up 3-0 in the opening period before connecting on a 23 yarder to give the Dawgs a 6-3 edge in the second quarter.

The SEC’s active leader with 63 field goals, Walsh is now eighth in the league’s record books for points scored in a career (350) and has the eighth most field goals of any kicker in league history. Walsh is also third in UGA history in most points scored behind SEC record holder Billy Bennett (409) and former All-American Kevin Butler (353).

From Knoxville To Nashville

FOOTBALL

The Georgia football team looks to build off its four-game win streak, as the team prepares for Vanderbilt on Saturday in Nashville.

“I do think we are getting better,” coach Mark Richt said on Sunday. “I know we haven’t reached our potential yet that’s for sure, so that is good news.”

The Dawgs (4-2, 3-1 SEC) helped Richt reach his 100th victory at Georgia with a 20-12 win at Tennessee. The players were able to let Richt celebrate after accumulating 366 total yards on offense. The offensive line provided good pass protection for sophomore quarterback Aaron Murray who had 227 yards on 15-for-25 passing.

“Kenarious Gates got some work in there, and I think Chris Burnette played well,” Richt said. “There was about two times where a guy got clean, but really (Murray) had time, space and was pretty comfortable back there. There were no sacks, and I don’t think he got knocked down at all. So I think some of it had to deal with Chris being back, but the rest was the guys just doing a good job this time around.”

Georgia is 23-11-2 when playing the Commodores in Nashville while being 9-1 in the last 10 meetings. Richt announced that freshman wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell will not play this week, but is hopeful for a return for the Florida game.

The team will get a new look at Vanderbilt (3-2, 1-2 SEC) this season, as the Commodores are now headed by new head coach James Franklin.

“The good news is when you play a new coach and new staff seven games in, there is enough film to have a pretty good idea of what they are going to try to accomplish and how they are going to try to do it,” Richt said. “No one tries to reinvent the wheel in a week’s time, so we will have a pretty good gauge of what we are dealing with.”

Dawgs Beat Vols In Knoxville

FOOTBALL

With tonight’s 20-12 win, coach Mark Richt improved to 100-36 in this his 11th season (58-29 in the SEC). He becomes just the third coach in UGA history to reach 100 wins, joining Wally Butts (140) and Vince Dooley (201). Butts and Dooley reached that milestone in their 14th season. On a related note because the Dawgs are in Knoxville, the legendary UT coach Robert Neyland reached 100 wins in his 133rd game as an SEC coach, although the SEC formed in 1933, and he began at UT in 1926. Overall, Richt’s teams are now 4-2 in Knoxville and 36-10 overall in an opponent’s home stadium.

Georgia won its fourth straight to improve to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the SEC. During this streak, Georgia has outscored the opposition 130-35. Overall, Georgia's defense limited UT to a pair of field goals in the first half and then one touchdown with 2:51 left in the contest. In the past 16 quarters, Georgia's defense has allowed just two touchdowns.

UT came in ranking second in the league in total offense (447.5 yards/game) and fourth in scoring at 37.8 ppg. Also, the Volunteers were held to minus 20 rushing yards on 23 attempts. The previous low in the Mark Richt era in an SEC game was 1 yard by Tennessee in 2008 on 15 attempts, and it is an all-time low under Richt. The minus 20 yards matches the third fewest in school history (matching The Citadel in 1958). It was the fewest since a record minus 50 by Kentucky in 1999.

After scoring just six points in the second half in the past two games, the Dawgs tallied 14 points in the third quarter on their first two possessions. The second TD was a three-play, 93-yard drive highlighted by a career-long 71-yard reception by freshman Malcolm Mitchell from Aaron Murray and then a 17-yard rushing touchdown by freshman Isaiah Crowell. The first scoring drive covered just 38 yards and ended on a one-yard plunge by Crowell. The passing play to Mitchell was the longest of the season for the Dawgs, the previous high was 69 yards by the same duo against Ole Miss. Mitchell had his first career 100-yard receiving game tonight, finishing with 3 catches for 126 yards. On the big completion, Mitchell injured his left hamstring and did not return. Murray finished 15-for-25 for 227 yards while Crowell had 19 carries for 58 yards.

Junior ILB Mike Gilliard has been the leading tackler for the Dawgs the past four games. He had a career-high nine against Mississippi State last week and followed that up with a new career high getting 12 along with one forced fumble, a sack, a pass breakup and one tackle for a loss. Also, safety Shawn Williams tied his career-high with seven and added a blocked PAT.

Senior Blair Walsh made a 35-yarder to put the Dawgs in front 3-0 in the first quarter and a 22-yarder in the second quarter for a 6-3 edge. He has 63 field goals, which is the most of any active kicker in the SEC and ranks eighth overall in league history. He is 63-for-82 in his career.

Coming in tonight, Georgia was 3-for-9 on fourth down conversions. In the first quarter, Georgia was 3-for-3 on fourth downs and finished with that tally.

Sophomore guard Chris Burnette returned to the starting lineup at right guard. He missed the past two games while recovering from a knee injury. Junior nose John Jenkins made his first career start. He is the 14th first-time starter for the Dawgs this year.

Junior cornerback Branden Smith notched his first rushing attempts of the season tonight (2 for 19 yards). He has played on both sides of the ball and on special teams as a PR/KOR throughout his career.

Tonight’s captains for the Dawgs were seniors Drew Butler (P), Cordy Glenn (OT), DeAngelo Tyson (DE) and Brandon Boykin (CB).

Next Week: Georgia (4-2, 3-1 SEC) will face Vanderbilt in Nashville at 7 p.m. ET on October 15th, and the game will be televised by FOX SportSouth.

Tuesday Press Conference–Part 3

FOOTBALL

Coach Mark Richt

On using the South Carolina and Florida losses last week to motivate Georgia’s players…

The fact that South Carolina and Florida lost is definitely a motivating factor for everybody. That’s why we have the plaques on the wall. We’re shooting for the Eastern Division title. That’s our goal. It helps us and gives us a better chance of doing that if we continue to win. I haven’t talked about it a lot other than mentioning and reminding everybody what happened. They know it. As it was happening, guys are texting each other, coaches are texting each other. Everybody certainly got excited about how the standings are sitting right now compared to how it was a week ago. We all know it’s so crucial to take care of our business, because if we don’t it’s not going to be that much fun anymore. We just need to keep winning.

Tennessee in next and every SEC opponent is almost equal. Us losing head-to-head to South Carolina hurts us compared to them losing to a Western Division foe, so they are still in better shape than we are. It does go by the overall record and the tiebreakers are what can get you if you end up in a tie. Right now we still don’t control our own destiny, but we feel like if we keep playing hard there is a lot of football to be played. We’re definitely in the race.

On updating Brandon Boykin's practice status…

Boykin will not get any contact this week because of the teeth but he will play.

On a definitive decision on Cornelius Washington's suspension…

It's going to be a solid two games.

On who might replace Cornelius Washington…

It will probably be a little bit by committee to decide how we are going to handle the loss of Cornelius this week and next week. It is definitely going to provide more opportunities for Ray Drew, and there are other things we might move around to help us in that area, but we’ll know better after we practice a little bit.

On the defense being improved and not allowing a lot of big plays…

We've played very good defense and part of that is not giving up the big plays. I guess we've given up one touchdown the last three games – that's pretty impressive. I like what's going on in that regard. A lot of it has to do with maturity of our defensive backfield. A lot of it has to do with how the defensive line has been playing and not letting anybody really get anything started. Not very many runs have spit right threw the line where a guy has a chance to make a safety miss in space and make a big run. They've had to earn everything they get. Very few times has someone come through there clean, and when they have the 'DBs' have been there to corral it and get them on the ground. We've been tackling pretty well out in space.

On Georgia’s defensive line…

The D-line is doing extremely well. All defensive coaches want to stop the run. They know if you can get a team to be one-dimensional or as one-dimensional as possible it could play in your favor. We’ve done a good job of holding the point and penetrating and forcing doubles teams and allowing linebackers to get free hits. All those things have been very important, and especially when we had the injuries at linebacker. It was good for a guy like Amarlo Herrera and Michael Gilliard to have guys playing up front real stout. We’re beginning to get more pressure from our pass rush without some type of a blitz. We’re starting to get more sacks, starting to get more pressure, and getting more balls thrown where they can be intercepted. We’ve intercepted a few of them and dropped a few. There were probably two pick sixes in the last two games that really could have changed the game, but the D-line is doing great right now.

On Tennessee’s Da’Rick Rogers…

I think wherever Da’Rick decided to go play football he’d be playing, no doubt about that. By the time he did decommit we were pretty sure that he was going to do that. It didn’t come as a shock at that point. We think he’s a good player. We wanted him, we recruited him, we thought we had him for a while, then it changed. It happens in recruiting. It doesn’t happen a lot with us historically. But there were some things that made him feel like Tennessee was the best place for him, so that’s where he is and now we have to defend him.

Linebacker Mike Gillard

On Tennessee’s quarterback Tyler Bray…

Tennessee’s quarterback is a really good player. Against a guy like him, we really have to go out there and make plays. He’s a tall, rangy guy who can get the ball into really tight places. We have to be able to put some pressure on the quarterback. This game is going to be a test for us. We have to go out there and make plays on him and his wide receivers.

On the success of the defense…

It feels good, especially to hear the stats that we have put up. It’s amazing. Coach Grantham really emphasizes running to the ball and playing lights out. We made up our mind to go out there and be one of the best defenses in the country. It’s a credit to our coaches. They really work hard, day in and day out, to put the players in the best position to win the game.

On getting healthy on the defensive side…

Getting some of the guys back creates a lot of depth on the defense. To be a good defense, you need to have depth and have good players to back up the starters.

On the pass defense…

Our coaches have kept emphasizing the importance of getting sacks and putting pressure on the quarterback. I feel like the outside linebackers and defensive lineman have been going out there and have wanted to get sacks.

Defensive End Abry Jones

On the improvement of the defense the last few weeks…

I think we have realized the goals that we set out for the season. Great teams always have a great defense. I think we are recognizing the amount of talent that we have. The players all want to make our mark on Georgia history.

On getting sacks…

It brings a totally different feeling to the defense. Once you have linemen getting sacks and getting into the groove of things, they start getting more and more. It also creates competition among the linemen about who can get the most sacks.

On if the importance of this week’s game…

Every game we play is a bigger test than the last one. This is a rivalry, so we want to go out and play well. We have some momentum going into the game and no one wants to see that momentum stopped. Tennessee is going to come out, play hard and try to get a win on us.

On how the team is preparing…

Now that we have won a few games in a row, people are ready to go out there and practice and work hard. People are thinking about what they need to do after practice, during practice and what they need to do to get ready for practice.
