UGA Sports Communications

The University of Georgia Lady Dawg basketball team made history Thursday night, recording the program’s 1,000th all-time win with a 66-45 victory at East Carolina.

The Lady Dawgs (3-0) become one of just two SEC schools — joining Tennessee — and one of 16 programs nationwide to earn 1,000 wins.

“This win is a tribute to Andy Landers and all the great players who came before us,” head coach Joni Taylor said. “Georgia basketball is special because of all the players, coaches, staff and fans who have and continue to invest so much into this program. It is an honor for our team to be a part of this special night.”

A trio of Lady Dawgs scored in double figures, led by Que Morrison’s 13 points. Jenna Staiti hit double figures for the 11th time in 12 games with her 12 points. Javyn Nicholson added 12 of her own and finished the night a perfect 4-for-4 from the field.

Georgia hit the first three baskets of the game and held East Carolina scoreless the first five minutes.

Nicholson knocked in Georgia’s first two buckets of the second quarter, before the Pirates went on a 6-0 spurt to put the score at 23-16 with 3:53 remaining before the half.

Georgia held East Carolina to a 24-percent shooting effort in the first 20 minutes, but 13 Lady Dawg miscues kept East Carolina close with a 25-18 halftime score.

Georgia committed six turnovers in the first six minutes of the third quarter as ECU cut the Lady Dawgs’ lead to 35-29 at the 4:20 mark. A 3-point bucket from Sarah Ashlee Barker and back-to-back makes from Morrison put Georgia up 46-34 going into the fourth.

Nicholson scored the first six points of the final quarter and Georgia left Greenville with a 66-45 win.

The Lady Dawgs return home to host Oklahoma at noon ET Sunday. The game will be televised nationally on SEC Network.
