Kaelyn Causwell, a signee who will join the Georgia Lady Dawgs this fall, is one of 26 athletes who have accepted invitations to attend the 2012 USA Basketball Women's U18 National Team Trials.
The selected team will compete in the 2012 FIBA Americas U18 Championship in San Juan, Puerto Rico, from Aug. 15-18 with hopes of securing a berth in the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championships.
Causwell is a 6-4, forward, who helped lead the Wesleyan School to its fifth straight Class A state championship this season. The Lady Wolves finished the 2011-12 campaign with a 29-4 record and at No. 18 in the final ESPN PowerAde Fab 50 national rankings.
Trials to select the 12-member USA squad will be held May 19-21 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center (USOTC) in Colorado Springs, Colo. After arriving in Colorado on May 18, the participants will get on the court on May 19 at 8:30 a.m. MDT and will hold a second session at 3:45 p.m. MDT. There will be two additional sessions on May 20 followed by a final workout on May 21. It is anticipated that the team will be announced at 11 a.m. that morning.
The selected team will regroup at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Fla., for its first training camp from May 28-June 2. The squad will then return to the USOTC for a final camp Aug. 3-12 prior to traveling to Puerto Rico.
The Georgia Lady Dawgs have a long history of success with USA Basketball. All told, 25 Lady Dawgs have represented the USA in more than 40 different competitions worldwide.
Most notably, Teresa Edwards and Katrina McClain are two of the most decorated American basketball players ever. Edwards is the only American basketball player to participate in five Olympic Games, winning four Gold Medals. McClain became just the third American joining Edwards and David Robinson to play in three Olympics and won a pair of Gold Medals.
